Products
Products are CPTs. Types supported:
- Simple — one SKU, one price
- Variable — multiple variants with different prices (e.g., sizes, licenses)
- Subscription — recurring billing (monthly, annual)
- Bundle — a package of other products at a set price
- Course — an LMS course wrapped as a purchasable product
- Application fee — tied to an Admissions pathway
Plans
A plan groups subscription products at different tiers. Example: "Membership" plan with Bronze/Silver/Gold tiers, each with its own price and entitlements. Users can upgrade or downgrade between tiers mid-cycle; proration is handled automatically.
Stripe gateway
Checkout is Stripe-hosted (Checkout Sessions). PCI compliance lives with Stripe. Local site never touches card data. Supported:
- Cards (all global networks)
- Apple Pay / Google Pay (automatic when conditions are met)
- SEPA Direct Debit (EU)
- Link
- Klarna (Pay Later)
- Afterpay / Clearpay
Stripe credentials are stored in the Credentials Vault.
Orders
Each successful checkout becomes an Order. Orders track: line items, taxes, discounts, payment status, fulfillment status, Stripe payment intent, customer contact (linked to CRM).
Admins see orders in a searchable list. Customers see their own orders on the My Orders page.
Subscriptions
Subscription products create Stripe Subscription objects. Commerce tracks renewals, cancellations, payment failures, and entitlement windows. When a subscription lapses, Commerce fires a commerce_subscription_lapsed action so other modules can revoke access (LMS drops enrollment, for example).
Discounts
Percentage or fixed-amount discount codes. Per-code limits: max uses, minimum cart size, product/category restrictions, expiry. Automatic cart-level promos (spend $100, save $10) also supported.
Tax
For compliant tax calculation, pair with Stripe Tax. Without it, Commerce supports simple flat-rate tax zones.
Shipping
For physical goods, pair with EasyPost for real-time carrier rates and label printing.
